Quito And The Andes: The Misty Caldera Of Pululahua

Pululahua means “smoking water” and nature was indeed smoking when we came there. We where very glad to see the ground from above.

This crater is the only inhabited crater of Ecuador. There are 120 people living and cultivating coffee and potatoes in this strange place. The mountain was once an estimated 6,000m high until the underlying magma chamber collapsed. Today the caldera is surrounded by some mountains measuring around 3300 meters.

If you go there, don’t miss to have a lunch at the fantastic restaurant “El Crater” with a view of the caldera from above.
